CLASSIC COMEDY REVIEW: TWELVETY MEMORABLE SKETCHES FROM THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN

Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson are utter geniuses! Having won the top comedy award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1994 they successfully took their surreal and grotesque character comedy from the radio to the TV. Thus, in 1999 they brought an array of wonderfully drawn comedic characters, both funny and horrific in equal measures, to the small screen.

The show ran for three brilliant seasons and here are some the best moments I could find on YouTube. If you’ve never seen the show then you should as it retains its ability to shock, horrify and more than anything else make you piss yourself laughing.

Please note: these are the best sketches I could find online and there many more throughout the show, so do catch up with it on Netflix if you’ve never seen it. Once you start watching the inhabitants of Royston Vasey – YOU’LL NEVER LEAVE!

  1. This was such a great trip down memory lane for moi. I used to watch this alot when jt aired on television, it was a series I didn’t want to miss. The little clips you have selected remind me how eccentric, creepy yet funny faced this show is. I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste but I loved the creepy atmosphere it brought. There isn’t a show quite like this which brings it’s unique sketches to a new level. It’s wonderful even to this day. It’s certainly scary and off putting at times (eating wasn’t so ideal at the time), but that’s what I love about it. I’m glad to know you are fond of it too. Thank you for resurfacing my memories of such a show. This was a lovely read Paul.

    1. You’re welcome and thanks for the kind comments. I’ll be posting about Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s equally horrific and comedic show Psychoville next week too.

Btw – do check out Inside No. 9 if you haven’t already. Two seasons on Netflix; it echoes the Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected. In fact it has some of the best writing and work Shearsmith and Pemberton have ever done.

      1. They are truly fascinating to watch, their versatility seems to have no bounds. I shall indded have a look. Time seems pressing and I haven’t been abke to sit down and watch a series properly since Fargo which I shoukd add has now released two episodes for season three. I’m sure you knew. I watched the first episode and I do like it. They are superb at storytelling. I look foward to reading your post when I come by it. 🙂
